LG Velvet back standing up

  • A set of leaked marketing materials gives us an idea of what the LG Velvet 2 Pro might have been like.
  • The phone allegedly would have had a Snapdragon 888, 120Hz refresh rate, and other high-end specs.
  • LG allegedly sold a few thousand of the phones to employees when it pulled out of the smartphone industry.

In 2020, the LG Velvet was a fun and surprising new addition to the mid-range space. While it wasn’t incredibly powerful, it certainly was a looker and would be a fine phone for most users.

Unfortunately, earlier this year LG pulled out of the smartphone industry entirely. That means there will never be a commercially-released sequel to the Velvet. However, we do know that LG planned to launch the LG Velvet 2 Pro this year, and even got so far as making a few thousand early versions. The company sold these to employees when it exited the industry.

Now, thanks to leaker @FrontTron, we have an idea of what might have been under the hood for the Velvet 2 Pro. The leaker posted a set of marketing materials that show the sequel to the Velvet would have been much more in line with a flagship phone than last year’s model.

According to the leaked materials, the LG Velvet 2 Pro could have been a true flagship for 2021. It allegedly would have had a Snapdragon 888 processor under the hood, which is the most powerful Android silicon available at the moment.

Elsewhere, it would have had a 120Hz refresh rate on a 6.8-inch OLED display with 1080p resolution. The display would have had curved sides and HDR support. Inside, you’d find 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage with a 4,500mAh battery. The small-ish battery likely would have been necessary to keep the phone thin — it only measured 7.5mm thick, according to this leak.

On the back, there would have been a triple-lens camera with a similar design as the “waterdrop” array of last year. There would have been a 64MP Sony sensor in the primary spot with a 12MP ultra-wide and 8MP telephoto supporting it.

Obviously, we’ll never see the LG Velvet 2 Pro or any other LG smartphone again. It’s a shame, too, as this could have been a big hit if LG made it available worldwide and kept the price reasonable. We’ll never know.
