  • Asus has teased a punch-hole cutout for its Zenfone 8 series.
  • This would be a major departure from its previous flip camera devices.

Asus made a splash back in 2019 with the Zenfone 6, offering a flagship with a unique flipping camera mechanism. This flipping setup allowed you to take selfies with the rear cameras, while also enabling a proper full-screen experience.

The company followed this same formula for last year’s Zenfone 7 range, but it looks like Asus is hinting at a more traditional camera setup for the Zenfone 8 family. The firm posted a video online, showing a phone design with a punch-hole cutout (see the screenshot above) while also hinting at a high refresh rate screen.

It’s unclear if this punch-hole cutout will appear on all Zenfone 8 devices or just the “mini” version. But it certainly sounds like Asus is talking about the mini/compact version at the very least.

Nevertheless, the flipping camera setup was a legitimately useful feature, allowing for higher quality selfies and selfie videos as well as enabling panoramas without moving the phone. But one of the drawbacks to such an eclectic design is that water resistance is a massive challenge. So we hope Asus brings a solid IP rating if it’s indeed going to forego the flippy camera.

It’s also theoretically possible that this is only a placeholder design rather than being representative of the final product. We previously saw Asus send out a phone-shaped plastic cutout as part of press invitations for the Zenfone 8 launch, and this didn’t have a punch-hole cutout. So we’ll just have to wait until May 12 to get the official details.

Would you ditch the Zenfone family’s flipping camera setup if the phones got water resistance instead? Let us know via the poll above.
