  • Today is the 25th anniversary of the Nintendo 64 launch. It would be a great time to do some Nintendo 64 emulation on your Android phone.
  • The Nintendo 64 carried some of the greatest games of all time, including Super Mario 64 and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
  • Most Android phones should be able to emulate N64 games without issue.

If you’re old enough to remember getting a Nintendo 64, then get ready to feel really old: that happened around 25 years ago. Today is the 25th anniversary of that console’s original launch, which happened on June 23, 1996, in Japan, Nintendo’s home country.

Knowing this, you might want to celebrate the occasion by playing some N64 games. While getting a physical console isn’t impossible, it can be expensive, especially if you want something in mint or close-to-mint condition. Instead, why not just do some Nintendo 64 emulation with the computer in your pocket?

These days, pretty much every Android smartphone should be able to emulate N64 games without issue. There are a few games that are problematic for weaker systems, such as Star Wars Episode 1: Racer. But if you have even a mid-range phone from the past few years, there are hundreds of games you can enjoy from start to finish without any graphical glitches or other problems.

We have an article dedicated to Nintendo 64 emulation specifically for you to peruse. We also have a few tips for folks just getting into emulation in general. And, if you’re worried your budget phone might not be up to the task, we have some tips on how to figure that out, too.

Unfortunately, we can’t point you towards how to get games for N64 emulators. We can, however, suggest you start with the ice-cold classics, such as Super Mario 64, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask, GoldenEye: 007, Paper Mario, and Banjo Kazooie.
