  • Redmi has revealed an April 27 launch date for its gaming phone.
  • The new device seems to be called the Redmi K40 Gaming Edition.
  • It looks like the phone has Black Shark-style retracting shoulder buttons too.

Redmi confirmed earlier this year that it was working on a gaming phone, hinting that the device would be powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 1200 processor. Now, the Xiaomi sub-brand has revealed that the device will be launching next week.

The company announced an April 27 launch date on Weibo, while also giving us the Redmi K40 Gaming Edition name according to machine-translation. The post also showed off a tantalizing glimpse of the new phone, revealing a triple rear camera system and a rather interesting right-hand side. Check out the image below.

Our best guess is that Xiaomi is taking a page out of the Black Shark 4 playbook by including shoulder buttons that can extend and retract via the slider key. Presumably there’s another slider key/shoulder button pairing on the phone for a more console-like input experience. Either way, retracting shoulder keys would give users the best of both worlds, as you can have a clean design most of the time and pop up those buttons when you actually need them.

The Redmi K40 Gaming Edition has reportedly been certified in China already, apparently serving up a 5,000mAh battery with 67W wired charging, a Samsung E4 OLED screen with a center-mounted punch-hole cutout, and a 144Hz refresh rate.

The inclusion of the Dimensity 1200 chipset should also give Redmi’s phone a solid amount of grunt and software-based ray-tracing support. But the processor has an older, less capable GPU on paper than Samsung’s Exynos 1080, Huawei’s Kirin 9000, and the Snapdragon 888. But hopefully the new phone delivers an attractive price tag compared to other gaming-focused phones on the market.

We’ve asked Redmi whether the new device will be available outside China and will update the article if/when we get a response.
