  • The Samsung Galaxy S22 and S22 Plus could be made out of plastic.
  • Only the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra is rumored to come with a glass body.

Samsung may be looking to use more plastic and less glass in the construction of its Galaxy S22 series of devices. According to a South Korean tipster (via ITHome), Samsung will use a “brand new processing technology” to create the back cover of the Galaxy S22 and S22 Plus. However, the rumor suggests that both devices will be made of plastic instead of glass. Only the Galaxy S22 Ultra, the report claims, will have a glass back cover.

Currently, both the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra and S21 Plus sport glass backs. Meanwhile, the standard Galaxy S21 is made of polycarbonate plastic.

These latest rumors, combined with the one we recently heard about Samsung reducing the screen sizes of the Galaxy S22 and S22 Plus, suggest that Samsung wants the Ultra model to stand out even more next year.

Besides the larger screen and the glass body, the Galaxy S22 Ultra is also said to be the only phone to carry an LTPO (low-temperature polycrystalline oxide) display.

Samsung Galaxy S22 series: Plastic vs glass

We saw a price reduction in the Galaxy S21 models compared to their predecessors, and Samsung probably wants to keep that momentum going with the next set of Galaxy S series flagships. The move to more plastic could also be a way for Samsung to offset the possibly higher cost of the new Snapdragon chipset or the Exynos chip with an AMD GPU these phones are expected to offer.

That said, having plastic bodies isn’t necessarily a bad thing. In fact, we quite liked the plastic shell of the Galaxy S21. Plastic phones are less prone to shattering than those made with glass. They also don’t slip in the hand as much as glass phones, making them more durable. If Samsung is creating the Galaxy S22 and S22 Plus with a new proprietary technique as rumored, you can expect the phones to also look as premium as their glassy elder sibling.

Then again, all these are unconfirmed rumors as of now. The narrative could change a lot as we get closer to the launch of the phones. Until then, vote in our poll above and tell us what you think of the new Samsung flagships flaunting plastic bodies.
