Modern smartphones are essentially pocket computers packing enough power to perform plenty of advanced computing tasks. Some OEMs take advantage of this by bolting on a dedicated desktop mode to their devices.

Samsung’s Dex mode is a better-known example, allowing its tablets and smartphones to project onto larger displays. Huawei‘s Easy Projection and Motorola‘s Ready For feature allow similar functionality with a handful of devices. Essentially, these modes turn smartphones into tiny computer towers.

That said, desktop mode isn’t a ready replacement for a workstation or laptop. It does allow those who use Android apps regularly to view them on a larger display. General tasks, like word processing or photo editing, are also fair game. You may, however, still need a mouse and keyboard. In some cases, a cable or two may also be required.

If you own a Samsung or Huawei device, chances are you’ve toyed with their respective desktop modes. But how often do you use it? Has it become a genuine part of your daily workflow? If you don’t use it on an external display, how do you use it?

Be sure to vote in our poll above. If you have any anecdotes, do drop them in the comments down below.
