  • Samsung has filed for a patent on a smart display.
  • It’s not certain if this will ever be a shipping product.
  • Don’t count on it using Bixby if it becomes real.

Samsung’s attempt at a smart speaker hasn’t panned out almost three years later, but that isn’t stopping the company from exploring the category. MySmartPrice has found a Samsung patent filing for a smart display design that’s unusually plausible.

The Samsung concept looks much like Lenovo’s Smart Display and embraces the same basic concept as similar devices: you’d use voice commands to control the device and get audiovisual feedback through the screen or speaker. The patent suggests you could rotate the display on its side to get content in a vertical mode — a relative novelty in this category.

There’s no guarantee Samsung will ever ship a smart display like this. Patents are explorations of ideas, not necessarily product roadmaps. The company first filed the patent with WIPO in August 2020 and clearly hasn’t been in a rush to bring it to market.

Still, this raises a question: would you buy a Samsung smart display if it existed, whether or not it looked like this? Let us know in the poll below.

There might be reasons to get a Samsung smart display over alternatives from the likes of Amazon, Google, and others. The company has a knack for design, and it may boast hardware or software features that help it stand out from the pack. You could expect tight integration with Galaxy phones and other parts of the Samsung ecosystem.

And no, we wouldn’t count on Samsung using Bixby. Samsung isn’t leaning quite so heavily on its often-criticized AI helper these days, and the company’s increasing cooperation with Google suggests that it might use Assistant rather than an in-house solution. As it stands, the Galaxy Home’s vaporware status makes off-the-shelf voice technology more viable — if Samsung can’t release an audio-only Bixby device in a timely fashion, a smart screen is that less likely.
