  • An official Honor 50 series teaser image has revealed a unique camera design with two circular housings.
  • It looks like one housing hosts a large main camera.
  • Other supposedly leaked pictures give us a closer look at the camera housings along with colorways.

Honor announced that the Honor 50 series would be launching later this month, and we got a fleeting glimpse of the phone last week thanks to a teaser (seen above). Now, it looks like Honor and third parties have given us a closer look at the upcoming phones, showing a rather crazy camera design.

An image posted on the Honor Weibo account shows the back of the phone, complete with a glittery silver colorway of sorts. But look a little closer and you’ll see two circular camera housings, with one hosting a seemingly giant camera sensor and the other hosting three smaller cameras and a flash. This camera layout appears to be confirmed in three more images reportedly posted on Weibo and shared by tipsters Ishan Agarwal and Rodent950. We’re unable to verify the actual source of these pictures, but it would point to a large primary lens too. The images also show off more apparent colorways, including a black model and a rather eye-catching pink/purple/blue gradient color scheme. Check out these pictures below.

We’re guessing Honor is either bringing an ultra-high resolution main camera (e.g. 100MP) or a huge main sensor with a much lower resolution (much like the 20MP one-inch sensor on the Sharp Aquos R6). There are upsides and downsides to each approach, but it definitely feels like we’re at a point of diminishing returns by opting for more megapixels.

We’ve also previously seen more conventional main cameras paired with micro-gimbal setups for improved stability, resulting in a bigger housing, so this is theoretically possible too. There are no details on the other three cameras though, but we’re guessing ultra-wide and telephoto offerings are available here.

Honor earlier confirmed that its new series will be powered by the Snapdragon 778G chipset. It added at the time that a new Honor Magic series with “the most premium Qualcomm chipset” would be launched too. A company Twitter account also said these phones would offer Google support in a now-deleted tweet.

What do you think of the Honor 50 series design? Let us know via the poll above or leave a comment if you want to elaborate.
