The Kansas City Chiefs are starting fresh at the quarterback position after trading veteran Alex Smith to the Washington Redskins during the offseason. The team will now go with Patrick Mahomes under center for the foreseeable future with the Texas Tech product proving to head coach Andy Reid and company he could be the next face of the franchise.
With Mahomes preparing for his first season as a starting quarterback in the NFL, the second-year gunslinger talked at length with Jenny Vrentas of Sports Illustrated’s MMQB about the immediate future in Kansas City. Mahomes, who certainly doesn’t lack confidence, believes the Chiefs could be building a dynasty with him and running back Kareem Hunt leading the way.
Kareem Hunt and I talk about building something together here. Seeing his success as a rookie and how hard he works, I’m excited to build a future with the Chiefs. With the young nucleus we have, I feel like we can have a great dynasty coming forward.
Although there’s a lot of optimism swirling in Kansas City about Mahomes’ potential to be a star in the NFL, the soon-to-be 23-year-old has a lot to prove before any talk of a dynasty can be brought into the discussion.
However, Kansas City is definitely a talented team with a lot of pieces around Mahomes to make this team strong competitor week in and week out for many years to come. Along with the prospect of Mahomes being a franchise quarterback, Hunt showed a lot of promise in his rookie campaign and both wideout Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce have proven to be reliable options in the passing game.
There may be a long way to go before the Chiefs can be dubbed the next dynasty in the NFL, but they’ve no doubt got the pieces to make things interesting heading into the 2018 campaign with Mahomes leading the way.
