‘We need two or three additions to compete for the title next season’
Arsene Wenger says he is “convinced” that Jack Wilshere’s future lies with Arsenal.
Wenger will be leaving at the end of the season but he thinks England midfielder Wilshere will sign a new deal.
Wilshere has endured bad luck with injuries in recent years but has been in fine form this season, prompting a great deal of speculation about his future.
However, Wenger thinks the 26-year-old is leaning towards signing a new contract.
“The latest conversation I had with Jack, it looks positive for the club,” said Wenger.
“I am not involved any more in negotiations but of course I’m still in touch with Jack.
“If he wants my advice, I will give it to him.
“I am convinced, like I was always, that his future is here.
“It was always my wish and I think it will happen, yes.”
Speaking to the supporters after his final home game in charge on Sunday, Wenger made it clear that he sees himself as an Arsenal fan as well.
Wenger thinks the Gunners can launch a Premier League title bid next term under whoever they name as his successor.
“The squad doesn’t need much,” said Wenger. “There is huge potential in there and good spirit.
“There’s a good basis. We need two or three additions and this team will compete for the title next season.
“We don’t need massive spending. You are seeing defenders go for £70m.”
