  • A Weibo user known for incredibly accurate Apple leaks has just announced they have been targeted by Apple’s lawyers.
  • “Kang” says the letter from Apple’s lawyers included screenshots of their previous leaks. They warned them not to continue with this practice.
  • Kang also says that Apple targeted other leakers, although they didn’t say which ones.

When it comes to Apple leaks, there are some leakers who are better than others. The two most prominent people who deliver accurate leaks most of the time are “l0vetodream” and “Kang,” both of whom operate on the Chinese microblogging site Weibo.

Allegedly, Apple’s team of lawyers has now targeted some of these prominent leakers. Recently, Kang reported receiving a letter from these lawyers that declares they must stop posting leaks. The letters included screenshots of Kang’s previous leaks. Kang didn’t say what the screenshots were, but it could have been the times they accurately leaked the entire iPhone 12 lineup or revealed the return of the MagSafe branding, among other accurate leaks in their past.

Apple leaks: The company cracks down

Here is an excerpt from Kang’s post, which has been translated using machine translation (via 9to5Mac):

Recently, Apple commissioned a law firm and sent some letters in groups. I also received this group message. The content is probably that you can’t disclose what we haven’t published on the Internet, which will give Apple’s competitors effective information and also mislead consumers, because what is disclosed may not be accurate.

Kang makes no mention of the other leakers who may have received a similar warning from Apple. Additionally, no other Weibo users have come forward to say they received the letter. In fact, l0vetodream came forward to say they did not receive the letter. Kang does say, however, that they plan to reduce Apple leaks in the future.

Apple is one of the most secretive companies in the tech sphere. In the Android world, we usually know pretty much everything about a device before it launches, while Apple’s anti-leaking efforts usually leave at least a few surprises on launch day.

One of Apple’s newer efforts to combat leaks is to deliver iOS updates in an a la carte fashion. Rather than give beta testers the full iOS 15 experience, for example, the company is only allowing certain testers and developers to try certain new features. This allows the company to keep tight control of who sees what before it goes out to the general public.
